Messner Mountain Museum and more

The natural landscape surrounding the village is so beautiful that it inspired the experienced mountain lover Reinhold Messner to open the Messner Mountain Museum in Sulden. Further locations of Messner Mountain Museums can be found at Juval Castle in Vinschgau, Sigmundskron Castle near Bozen, Bruneck Castle in Pustertal and on a summit plateau in the heart of the Dolomites.

A "highlight" of the local mountain is the Passo dello Stelvio, the "Stilfserjoch": the highest mountain pass in Italy and the second highest in the Alps. While motorsport enthusiasts and cycling fans go into raptures at the sight of the well-shaped curves in the road, nature lovers will be interested in the Stilfserjoch National Park which stretches from the road and is one of the largest and most diverse protected areas in Europe.

Living history in Vinschgau

We spare you the lecture on the history of our region, but not our tips for excursions where you can find out for yourself:

  • Three epochs in one really is possible! In the Churburg Romanesque, Gothic and Renaissance magically combine.
  • A building with charisma ... The Benedictine Abbey of Marienberg, with its white walls, was the spiritual centre of Vinschgau over many hundreds of years.
  • Superlative: With only 890 inhabitants Glurns is the smallest town in South Tyrol and the only town in Vinschgau. Simply amazing: with its townscape of the Middle Ages from 1500AD.

We need customs!

Stilfser Kloosen, Suldner Krampusse, Scheibenschlagen and Almabtriebe. What is the meaning behind these mysterious words? Find out for yourself...
